attach the NDA to your first message, or send it in reply to ours, and we sign it before the first call. you don't have to ask permission or explain why. a lot of first conversations are about a product nobody has announced yet, or a client list, or a security problem you'd rather not put in writing until someone has agreed to keep it confidential.
how it goes in practice

what you can say before it's signed
usually more than you'd think. what you're trying to achieve, roughly when, and the constraints that matter are enough for us to tell you whether it's something we do and what the next step looks like. the specifics can wait until the paper is in place. and the scoping conversation itself is free, NDA or not.
